The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store

More Than A Store-Really A Ministry

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul strives to provide for basic necessities. For over 50 years, our Thrift Store has furnished low cost clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods and other merchandise to the poor. Annually, more than 3,000 low-income people purchase goods at very minimal cost. These are items that are important to daily living that they would otherwise have to do without.

We are very different from other thrift stores-even those that are operated by non-profit charities. The merchandise offered by our store is sold at extremely discounted prices so customers have the dignity of purchasing what they needs.

Through the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, the Society provides bassinettes, layettes and cribs for infants. It partners with Holy Angels Shelter to provide needed items for families leaving the shelter and setting up new households; provides funeral suits and dresses for those who cannot afford to purchase these items when a death occurs; helps when a fire or natural disaster strikes a family and they need emergency clothing, furniture and household supplies; and clothes the homeless. It provides vouchers for essential household goods and furniture for those getting established or reestablished into an apartment or home.

In all of these “Special Works” the Society seeks to constantly minister to the urgent needs of the suffering poor.

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store is known throughout the community as the “Department Store of East St. Louis” and it is essential to the well-being of those who live here as well as hundreds from surrounding communities.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul utilizes the thrift store as a place to set up informational displays to address areas of concern and provide education on critical issues. Our thrift store is vital to the community. It is a gathering place, a place where people come to find hope and dignity.
