Holy Angels Shelter
In 1984, due to the increase in homeless families in St. Clair County, Catholic Urban Programs decided to stretch its ministry to include emergency shelter.
Holy Angels Shelter located at 1410 North 37th St. East St. Louis, Illinois is a 24-hour transitional shelter, for women, women with children, and intact families. Single men, especially elderly men can be housed in the finished basement rooms.
The shelter has an operational staff of 6 full time and 2 part time workers. The director and the social worker have an intake process, which helps them to do case management for each family, and individual that comes to Holy Angels. This process begins right away so that whatever services the family may need while at the shelter or to help them to get prepared to find permanent housing can be offered.
This case management and the services offered by the shelter staff in cooperation with other local agencies is what makes Holy Angels unique in our area.
A tutoring program instituted by the Ill. Office of Education provides an excellent opportunity for children staying at the shelter to keep up with their schoolwork. Just because a child is homeless, does not mean that the learning process must stop.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society, provides donated food, clothing, furniture
and other such necessities to help a family to become able to maintain permanent housing.
